What Colson realized about himself:

What he had told Ellery was true: he had been in a courtroom, but had never spoken to a judge before. He had not dared—and he felt that lack of courage now, and for the same reason: because he was queer, and he was deathly afraid of it being revealed. He couldn’t. There wasn’t any way he could do that, even if they picked him up in a police car and handcuffed him in that court. He couldn’t say that.

Colson and Ellery both have plenty of them.

“Right. So this big gust a wind come up, an course I didn’t slow down none, an it was dark, an I was tired, an I hydroplaned right into the guardrail. If I’d a been in a regular car I woulda be squished inside like a bug, but I was drivin a truck an just got folded up like an accordion.”

“Jesus Ellery. How fast was you goin?”

“I dunno, 80, 90.”

“Miracle yer still alive.”

“Oh yeah, well, Ford used ta make some real sturdy trucks, sweetheart.” His voice was soft, the sigh he made seemed to be not all relief at the massage, but perhaps in part, regret....

of Glenfiddich, Ellery's favorite whiskey.

Ellery came out with a fifth bottle and two shot glasses. “I take it we’re drinkin whiskey tonight...” and at Colson’s nod, handed him both glasses, broke the seal on the bottle, and poured double shots for both of them.

One of the things that prompted Colson to make some changes in his life.

It wasn't long after Colson moved in with his daughter, followed by a stretch of unemployment, that he began to do research.

I am bumping this thread, for anyone who is new or who is reading, to check in to the reworked original tales about Colson Grey, who was originally based on the post-Brokeback Ennis Del Mar:

I am working on chapter 40 now, and posting new chapters as a way to keep me busy and to refresh myself on the story for when I move ahead with a new one.

It certainly does.  Music to my ears.  :)

Thanks, Louise.
