How does pay for jury duty work in the US?

In Australia I twice had to front up for jury duty but was never selected. I therefore just lost one day's work each time.  There is a measly allowance which you should give to your employer if they are willing to pay you as usual.  I was fortunate in that the Catholic school system for whom I worked paid me as usual but let me keep the court allowance. The 2nd time was just a month before my senior students were due to sit their final exams but that excuse was not accepted so it was fortunate I only missed the one day. One lady told the judge she refused to judge her fellow man. The judge dismissed her but directed she not be paid for the day. The first time the judge came in and said "Well ladies and gentlemen you are all here but the guest of honour isn't." We were able to wander round the shops until after lunch when the defendant did finally front. He defended himself but did not like the look of me. I was told you are more likely to be rejected by the defendant's lawyer if you wear a collar and tie and so look conservative.
Here in NZ they do not call up anyone over 65 so I will never be called again. I think that is ridiculous, as people my age have the time to do jury duty and we are not gaga yet  ;D

Hiya Brian.  Good to see you here.

Jury duty here in the US pays (I believe) a whopping $5.00 a day.  ::)   I'm not sure what my job will offer me, I'll look that up in our Team Member Handbook when I get to the office on Friday.   As for age here, I believe the last year they will call on someone to serve as a juror is 75.

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

It varies with jurisdiction. Who would ever have imagined that Philadelphia would be generous, but we get a whopping $9.00 a day!

Here we get to bow out at the ripe young age of 70.  ;D

$5 ???
I thought Australia was measly. I jusrt checked. In NSW it is $106.30 per day for the first 10 days then goes to $239.80 but only if you are employed. it would have been less when I was called probably more than 20 years ago. There is apparently no age limit but health would be taken into account as an excuse.
NZ is more complicated but it is $31 rising to $40 (after5 days)  per half day plus you can claim for travel, parking and child care. I was wrong. I can still be called in NZ after having turned 65 but at that age I could apply to be permanently excused.

Hello Bettermost friends!

Yup, still on jury duty.  Heard more testimony today, and then tomorrow is a day off, so we can return to work.

Unfortunately, we may have to be here a little longer than thought.  It was originally thought that deliberations would be done by Monday.  We'll still have some more testimony Monday, and then the closing statements.  No court on Tuesday, so we'll need to come back Wednesday to deliberate.

Hello Bettermost friends!

Yup, back in work today, and that's fine!  ;D  It was good to be there after a few days in jury duty.

I found out that my job pays me my usual salary for jury duty, so I'm not losing anything, so I'm very happy about that!  ;D

busy weekend ahead.  Tonight went out to dinner with family, got to see Trenton Scott tonight at dinner for his mom (my niece) Shana.

Tomorrow is chore day, to get all that I can done before I have to go to the memorial service for Margaret.

Sunday is a BBQ, thrown by two of the guys on my bowling league, so that should be fun.  ;D

Hello Bettermost friends!

Busy day for me today.  I had to get some shopping done, then do the laundry, and then attend Margaret's memorial service.

I didn't stay very long, as I didn't see any people there from work.  When I signed the attendance book, I could see some of my coworkers' signatures, so they got there before me, and already spent time.

Margaret's husband recognized me, and he gave me a hug.  I spent some time talking to him, but he knew that I was the only bank person there at the time.  I didn't want him to feel obligated to talk to me, so after our brief conversation, I excused myself, said some prayers by the ashes, and then quietly slipped out.

After getting back to town, I stopped at a bakery for a cake, and then to a liquor store and got some Mike's Hard Limeade, and Mike's Hard Pink Lemonade.  I have a BBQ to go to tomorrow, being thrown by some of the bowlers on my league.

Now, I'm catching up online.

Hello Bettermost friends!

Yup, the jury duty continues.  We were in the jury room by 9:00, and stayed in court until mid-afternoon.

The plaintiff's attorney wants to re-call the plaintiff for rebuttal purposes, and then we'll hear the closing arguments, and then get instructions from the judge, and then we can deliberate.  I'm beginning to think that we'll be on this case for Thursday as well.

Ugh!

No court tomorrow, so I'll be back in my cubicle.

This coming weekend is Labor Day weekend, and I'm debating going to Best Buy to get myself a new flat-screen TV for the Labor Day sales.

Hello Bettermost friends!

Well, I wasn't that relaxed at work, but it was good to be back with my coworkers in my cubicle.

A rather quiet day today, I'm guessing there are a lot of people on vacation this week, due to Labor Day on Monday.  Therefore, I was able to catch up on everything, and even get some filing done as well.

Tomorrow, I return to the jury box, and possibly Thursday too.   I shall keep you updated.
